NG Developments celebrated the New Year by scooping more than £2million worth of new manufacturing contracts and March and April were even more fruitful.

NG Developments (Normanton) Ltd, based in Normanton, Wakefield is now recognised as one of the UK’s leading specialists in design, manufacturing and installation of architectural aluminium glazing and Rainscreen Cladding systems and its reputation is growing.

The business has been on a huge recruitment drive in the last six months and it has hired three more new team members in March and April. Two experienced draughtsmen and a new fabricator have joined the Normanton team. Collectively the company has now grown by more than 40% in less than 12 months but the directors are prudent and are determined to control expansion.

Adrian Lee, commercial director at NG commented: “With the budget being announced recently it is clear that times are tough and we have all seen that in the construction and manufacturing sectors. However, the sun has finally come out in 2011 and I believe Spring is also here in the economy too. Whilst we continue to build strong working partnerships with our current client base, we are being approached frequently by a number of potential new clients of late and are in the infancy stages of developing further partnerships.”

NG Developments has recently completed three different supermarkets (see enclosed images) including a new Sainsburys store in Nantwich. The 60,000 sq ft Nantwich store was the first project for NG working with Bowmer and Kirkland. As a result of the success of this partnership, NG has recently secured a further Sainsburys development with B and K at Welwyn Garden City.  To add to this, NG has been awarded another Tesco extension contract in Mansfield for Vinci.

Sainsbury’s press release describes the reasons behind the Nantwich project:

The store on Middlewich Road was knocked down and rebuilt to offer an extra 23,500 sq ft of sales space. In addition to a new Sainsbury’s café on the upper level with panoramic views of the store, the 60,000 sq ft superstore now has a full range of clothing, homeware and electrical products. Its range of counters has also been extended with new pizza and deli counters.

Lee continued: “We are establishing some really strong working partnerships which have helped us move the business forward over the last twelve months. We know that to grow in this sector you must be careful and not grow too quickly, so we have made a conscious decision to grow wisely rather than rapidly. However, we do expect to be recruiting again over the near future.”

NG Developments is also in contract negations on a number of other glazing projects which will help to secure a significant workload for the foreseeable future.

The Yorkshire manufacturing business has already secured five new projects and the growing influx of new business has enabled it to go on a major recruitment drive in the last six months, with a full-time receptionist and two new team members joining its installation team adding to the five new staff that joined in 2010.

Adrian Lee, commercial director at NG commented: “There is no doubt we are really happy the way 2011 has started for us, despite the gloomy way the UK economy looks at the moment. The good thing for our business is we now know we have enough work to see us well into the latter stages of this year. However, we still have a number of other exciting projects in the pipeline and we are always looking to win new business and expand even further. As a company we are hoping to create jobs this Spring not cut them.”

One of the projects that NG Developments has been commissioned to work on is a new Travelodge in Manchester working alongside contractor Marcus Worthingtons. This will be NG’s second Travelodge in only three months, as its team is currently putting the finishing touches to another hotel in Hull.
Lee continued: “We are really enjoying ourselves at the moment and looking to the future; as a company we have big plans to grow and develop and these new contracts will help us along that path. Investment in our manufacturing department continues with the purchase of a new Elumatec double-mitre saw, which will help increase overall productivity even further.”

NG Developments will be busy in the coming months helping with the rolling out of two new Building Schools for the Future (BSF) schools across the Sheffield area, the first of is The City School, a contract in excess of £1Million.

It has also landed a new contract to help with the construction of a new Starbucks’ coffee shop and an office block refurbishment in Northampton.
NG Developments is now in contract negations on several other multi-million pound deals planned for the second half of 2011.

NG Developments (Normanton) Ltd, based in Normanton, Wakefield and one of the UK’s leading specialists in design, manufacturing and installation of architectural aluminium glazing systems has seen phenomenal growth in 2010 and was recently commissioned to work on several new schools, hotels and supermarkets including Tescos, Sainsburys, Morrisons and Lidl stores.

Business is booming for the Yorkshire business which has secured almost 40 new contracts already this year. The influx of these new contracts has resulted in NG Developments having to recruit further staff, with five new people joining the team in 2010.

Adrian Lee, commercial director at NG commented: “There is no doubt we have been really busy in 2010, landing a similar annual number, yet larger contracts, but we are not complacent. The real growth area in our sector at the moment has been in retail and in particular the supermarkets. All of the leading supermarkets appear to be building new or extending existing stores at the moment across the country. You don’t have to travel very far to see this.

NG Developments has also recently been commissioned to start work on several new schools and a new Travelodge on Pryme Street in Hull, which has been designed by Harris Partnership in Wakefield. The team are currently finalising the design with an install date programmed to start in October 2010.

NG’s scope of works includes the majority of the envelope package to include SAS Curtain Wall and Windows, ACM Reynobond panels using the Sotech Flexi Rainscreen cladding system and a continuous louvered plant enclosure. This is the first Travelodge for NG but it is hoped this will be the first of many to come.

Lee continued: “Although we have been busy this year and have seen substantial growth in the retail sector of the industry, I doubt we’ll see any major market growth on the whole in the immediate future. The new governments public spending cuts in the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme, has created another big hole to fill throughout the construction industry and of the projects that have been cut, a lot of money has already been wasted at tender stage as a result. The idea appears to be that the private sector will pick-up the slack but only time will tell if the velocity of the private sector growth will match the decline in public sector work.”

These latest contract wins cap a remarkable year for NG Developments, In November NG Developments celebrated building Europe’s largest mosque which was all built to a completely bespoke design, and in May it announced a flurry of new supermarket contracts which have continued to grow and grow.

The new supermarkets include contracts for a huge Tesco store in Hanley, a Morrisons’ store in Openshaw and a Sainsburys’ venue in Biddulph, totalling in excess of 3500m² of Curtain Walling. These new business wins have added extra strength to NG’s growing portfolio of supermarket projects. In December 2009, NG Developments won the contracts for three Tesco stores in Skipton, Barnsley and Newcastle along with two Aldi stores in South Yorkshire.

Adrian Lee, commercial director at NG commented: “It’s no secret that the last two years have been a difficult time for businesses in general across the UK. However, towards the end of last year we started to win contracts for a number of supermarket projects, a sector still thriving, which has continued into 2010. In total, the supermarket side of our business has increased by more than 500%. As we operate in a very competitive industry, we’re thrilled to have landed these contracts.

Lee continued: “In recent months we have been busier than we have ever been before and this has resulted in us recruiting four new team members. Although times have been tough we are still completely committed to training our teams, so all of our fabricators are now qualified to a minimum of level 2 NVQ in the Fabrication of Glass Supporting Systems and our design team are about to take their accredited CDM (Construction Design and Management) courses.”

NG are delighted to have been awarded the Curtain Wall and window package by VINCI Construction UK Ltd, for High Storrs Secondary School in Sheffield, as part of the Building Schools for the Future (BSF) programme.

The existing Grade II listed building is undergoing re-furbishment, whilst all unlisted elements have been demolished to make way for the new build teaching block, complete with glazed ground floor link and first floor feature glazed link bridge, to the existing building.

NGs installation of the 650m² of Technal Curtain Walling, Insert Vents and Doors has already begun, along with over 300m² of timber windows, also within NGs package of works which is due for completion in April.

Following on from a successful 2009 of school projects, NG is delighted to have secured the contract for the aluminium Curtain Wall, Windows, Doors and Rainscreen Cladding package to St. Bedes Grammar School in Bradford.

The project consists of a contemporary new-build 3 storey classroom block and 4 storey atrium, integrated with the existing traditional stone built school; part of which is to be re-modelled included within NGs’ scope of works.  The package includes for the design, manufacture and installation of Technal MX curtain wall, FXi46 and 65 windows, CD automated and manual doors and Sotech extruded wall-plank rainscreen cladding.

Site work for NG is scheduled to begin early February 2010, with installation of over 1300m² of glazing and cladding due for completion within an 8 week programme.

The supermarkets include three new Tesco stores in Skipton, Barnsley and Newcastle and two Aldi stores in Sheffield and Grimsby.

This, along with the repeat business from our loyal client base, has helped NG grow through a downturn in the economy. Another key factor in this growth, has been through the diversity in the product range we are able to offer our clients. NG have a vast amount of experience in the design and installation of Rainscreen cladding systems and have recently added fire-rated Curtain Wall, Windows and Doors to our product range. The stores NG Developments have completed or are working on include:

3. Tesco, Eldon Square, Newcastle – a new Metro store in the heart of the Eldon Square shopping district.

4. Aldi, St Marys Gate, Sheffield – the re-development of existing units into a new Aldi store, due to be opened early in the new year.

5. Aldi, Grimsby – a new-build store using Technal MX Curtain Walling with anti-bandit glazing and automatic entrance doors.

NG Developments (Normanton) Ltd, based in Normanton, Wakefield and one of the UK’s leading specialists in design, manufacturing and installation of architectural aluminium glazing systems has created a giant fabricated web-facetted steel and aluminium framed, glazed dome for Europe’s largest mosque.

The dome, which will act as a beautiful gold centre piece, is being created from high specification toughened laminate gold glass, tons of steel and aluminium Curtain Wall.

When it is finished the dome will measure eight metres in diameter and stand at eight metres tall weighing an estimated 13 metric tons. It has to be strong and secure as it will be supporting a stunning two ton chandelier.

Adrian Lee, commercial director at NG commented: “This is certainly an interesting project as it’s a real break from the normal glazing systems we install. It’s the first dome we have built and we believe it’s going to be the biggest of its kind in Yorkshire. The dome element is just the largest part of a wider contract to which we have designed and installed curtain wall windows and doors to the rest of the project. It really will be an impressive sight to behold once it has all been finished.”

The dome will be placed at the centre of two other larger, light-weight GRP domes and 14 minarets. The centrepiece contains 48 double glazed units of high specification gold glass each weighing up to 210KGs.

The mosque, which is the biggest in Europe, has been carefully created with bepoke stone-work imported from India. Each piece of stone is slowly hand carved with chisels which is the reason the project has taken more than nine years to complete.

The dome is currently being constructed in-house in NG’s workshop in Normanton. When the structure has been finished and tested it will be broken down and transported across to the mosque’s site in Bradford. It will then be rebuilt on the ground and then carefully craned into position.

The dome should take the project team between three to four weeks to fully construct on-site. The mosque is due to be completed in 2011.

Taylor Woodrow, one of the countries’ major construction companies, has awarded NG Developments with this award for Health and Safety, for the company’s work on the new Tesco store being developed in Skipton.

This latest award marks a stunning year for NG Developments in terms of recognition for its safety record. In recent months the company has received several accolades for its safety including accreditations from the Contractors Health & Safety Assessment Scheme (CHAS) and the Building Register Approved status Certificate of Compliance. NG also recently achieved the prestigious ‘SAFE Contractor’ certification status back in May.

The new supermarket in Skipton had a tight three-week deadline for the first phase of Curtain Walling works, and thankfully our team managed to get the job completed safely, in just over two weeks, ensuing everyone was happy.”

The award was presented by Roy Kershaw, project manager, Taylor Woodrow to NG site foreman, Mr Dean Armitage and his team.

NG has manufactured and installed 600M² of Technal MX Curtain Walling system to the façade and lobby of the new supermarket, which is due to open to the public on 31^st August 2009. It is also installing Technal windows to further elevations of the building and automated entrance doors to the lobby using Record UK operators.
